What color should I paint my walls with green bedding and dark furniture?

August 30th, 2010

Question by Rebecca: What color should I paint my walls with green bedding and dark furniture?
My bedding is about this color — http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?SKU=113671&RN=26& — maybe a tad darker, but it has the satin lateral stripes in it. Right now my walls are a beigey-yellow color (that’s what they were when I moved in). I currently have light wood furniture – but I am looking to get new furniture in a dark wood – what color/s should I paint my walls? I have a great wall to make an accent (it’s got two windows and my bed sits in between them) – so if you have an idea that involves an accent wall, I’d love to hear that as well!

What’s covering your windows and what about the floor?

Personally I would go with a terracotta on the accent wall bring in a terracotta throw and accent pillow. Bamboo romans with Taupe drapes on the window similar to these tones

Taupe for the other walls.

But you be the judge upload an image of your room to this page and play with the colors. https://www.sherwin-williams.com/visualizer/

Question by Keri: What color to paint my baby boy’s nursery if I have sage green bedding?
This is the pattern

http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Dragonfly-Dreams-12-piece-Green-Crib-Bedding-Set/1988424/product.html

I don’t want to do yellow.

I was thinking along the lines of aqua blue or green. But thought that if I chose green there would be too much of it. I want it to be bright and cheery and boyish..

Please Help!
Thanks everyone.. great suggestions.. I forgot to mention the bedding has white dragonflies on it.. So i was going with a nature theme!!

Answer by The ReDesign Diva
I’ll give it a try… and though you may not find pink and green together, consider having the bedding mix and match (pink exterior bedding, green and white sheets, etc.)

Q&A: Do you like it? Another poem about my sweet Momma’s memories?

July 16th, 2010

Question by fishineasy™: Do you like it? Another poem about my sweet Momma’s memories?
Momma’s Outdoor Memories

The old clothes line
now sages to the ground.
the bag that held the pins
now holds a sparrows nest.

The flower beds always neat and trim,
now lay in disarray with weeds all within.
Flowers trying to peek around
the weeds that grow too high.

The pears off that old pear tree
she use to always can
They now lie rotting in the sun
with wasp and bees around.

The freezer that held the food she grew
is almost empty now.
Was filled so full with peas and corn
and peaches, beans and berries.

The wash room off the back of the house
Now full of junk and dirty
Once held her homemade jams and jellies,
canned tomatoes, pears and such.

The old water well that gave us fresh water
many years since filled in.
Now used as a table top in winter to feed the birds
and in summer to hold the flowers.

The front porch facing the road
you would think she would like to sit
but no she always choose that back porch swing
as her favorite place to be.

The old John Deere mower she finally had to give
to my brother
for she could not longer get on and off.
Her hips and knees just were too worn.

The next to go was her car
Like the last of her independence
We hated to see that time come
but it was her decision not ours.

I planted her a tomato plant
this year, like every year
since she has not been able
to do so for herself.

Now I go next door and take care of it.
Is so bittersweet to me.
It brings tears to my eyes
as I pick fruit and think of my sweet momma.

So many go memories of my mom outdoors
the place she loved so dearly
that’s why it’s so hard to go there now
that’s why it be be hard not to.
good* memories
Edit:
Last line

That’s why it’s so hard not to.
I guess I don’t like clean poetry…LOL!

Have you heard about the farmer who kept falling asleep in church?

July 1st, 2010

Question by Camille: Have you heard about the farmer who kept falling asleep in church?
Sleeping Through The Sermon

By William Webber I was pastor of a small church in a rural community. Wilbur and his wife, Leah, attended every Sunday morning. Wilbur was a farmer, and whenever he came into the house from the field and sat down, he would fall asleep.

It was such a habit that when he came into church and sat in the pew, he would also fall asleep. I discovered that some of the members of the church were taking bets to see how long I could keep Wilbur awake on Sunday mornings.

Wilbur’s wife was embarrassed by his behavior, especially when he began to snore. She tried everything to keep her sleepy spouse awake. She complained to him that she was getting calluses on her elbow from poking him in the ribs in a futile attempt to keep him alert.

One day, while shopping in the grocery store, she saw a small bottle of Limburger cheese. Leah bought it and dropped it in her purse. The next Sunday morning, I had just started the sermon when Wilbur began to nod.

When I finished the first point in my three-point sermon, I could see I was losing him. As I started the third point, Wilbur began to snore. Quietly, Leah opened her purse, took out the bottle of Limburger cheese and held it under her husband’s nose.

It worked. Wilbur sat up straight and, in a voice that could be heard all over the church, said, “Leah, will you please keep your feet on your own side of the bed!”

A farmer walked into an attorney’s office wanting to file for a divorce. The attorney asked, “May I help you?”

The farmer said, “Yea, I want to get one of those dayvorces.”

The attorney said, “Well do you have any grounds?”

The farmer said, “Yea, I got about 140 acres.” The attorney said, “No, you don’t understand, do you have a case?”

The farmer said, “No, I don’t have a Case, but I have a John Deere.”

The attorney said, “No you don’t understand, I mean do you have a grudge?”

The farmer said, “Yea I got a grudge, that’s where I park my John Deere.”

The attorney said, “No sir, I mean do you have a suit?”

The farmer said, “Yes sir, I got a suit. I wear it to church on Sundays.”

The exasperated attorney said, “Well sir, does your wife beat you up or anything?”

The farmer said, “No sir, we both get up about 4:30.”

Finally, the attorney says, “Okay, let me put it this way. WHY DO YOU WANT A DIVORCE?”

And the farmer says, “Well, I can never have a meaningful conversation with her.”

Q&A: I need help making a quilt?

June 28th, 2010

Question by Chancey’s Mom: I need help making a quilt?
I want to make a John Deere quilt for my best friend. I have 5 yards of yellow John Deere cotton fabric and 55 4″x4″ squares (11 different patterns, 5 of each), and a John Deere panel measuring 16″x16″. I have been trying to map this out for months, and I just don’t know how to get started. I had to cut over 100 more squares of the yellow fabric to make enough squares to have a good size quilt. I want it to be big enough maybe for a twin bed. Please, help me! I have never made a quilt before. I have a Singer Advance machine, but is it easier/better to do it by hand??

Best answer:

Answer by punchy333
Doing it by hand would take a long, long time, and cramp your hands.

Start out by drawing what you want to do with your squares on graph paper. Use colored pencils to color in the pattern of the blocks so you can use it as a reference. Some people will sew them together side by side, so that they have a long row of blocks, and some people will put 4 squares together to make a block, and them piece them together. Regardless, the easiest way to do this is to sew on the sides and make a row. Do this for all the rows of your quilt. Then sew each row together. Remember to make sure the good sides of the fabrics are facing each other so the seams will be on the inside of the quilt.

Then you will need to baste. The Amish baste by sewing long, loose strands all the way through the fabric, just to hold the pieces together. But, you can go to Wal-Mart and buy a can of spray baste. I get the June baste in the pink can. Spray it lightly on the back side of your squares. Then cover it with twin size batting with as much overhang as you desire for your border.

Now, usually, you would just spray the batting and put your panel on top, and then sew the lines of the blocks all the way through. But since you bought a panel with a graphic, you will need to attatch another (thin) twin size batting material to your panel. Then change out your foot to use a quilting foot and darning plate on your machine. You can create swirl patterns called allover quilting. You can use invisible thread, white thread, or change the color of thread depending on what color the background is. Or you can quilt out patterns that are already in your panel, such as outline the tractors, the sun, etc.

Once you’ve quilted both sides, spray a thin layer of basting spray on one of the battings and press them together. Trim the batting so you have even amounts all the way around. You can look up how to make and attatch the border, as it is a little complicated, and pictures really do help with the folding and ironing. The border will hold both pieces together for the most part, but you can always go through, and hand sew two to three stitches in the corner of every square foot, or even sew on a button on the square side. These two links should help:
